Business cards and journal sale

Well, I got the business cards and I love them – yay!

Really happy with how they turned out. Simple but packed with meaning.

Now that I’ve officially got a name, logo, and business cards, I’ve set up a bit of an online shop for my journals and am having a sale to go with the launch.

Just for my blog followers and YouTube subscribers, I’m taking $5 off all journals. So, whatever price is listed on my journals, take $5 off. That will mean prices range from $15 to $30.

The sale will last for a week as a celebration and thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me.

I’m not sure if anyone will want my journals, but I just want to give this opportunity. And if I do make any sales, the money will go towards a sewing machine.

I really want to get one after seeing fellow junk journalers and the amazing creations they make with sewing machines. But I’m really intimidated by the sewing machine, so I wouldn’t get it normally.

Also, I want 10% of all sales go to a charity. I just have to think carefully before I choose which one. But from now on, if I make any sales, I’ll put aside 10% for each journal.

I’ll keep you posted with which charity I choose and why.

I’m still getting set up and not sure how this will go but here’s my shop: Willowbound Journals Shop.

I’ve still got some journals to add and I’ll try to do flip-throughs of each of them.

I’m wondering if I should set up an Etsy shop instead? It just looks a bit intimidating working Etsy out, but if that’s what people prefer and if it’s easier for people, then I’ll definitely look at moving to Etsy.

Thanks so much for following my journey. It’s a bit rocky as I get started but I’ll learn as I go.

Really appreciate your support and encouragement and want to thank you so much!!!

The story behind the Willowbound name

Back at my childhood home, there was a magnificent willow at the front of the yard. It was massive!

I grew up playing under that willow and it was magical. I loved it in summer when no-one could see me through the curtain of leaves.

I felt like a princess climbing its branches, and my imagination ran wild as I made up stories and fantasy lands.

The willow was my favourite place; it was a place of beauty and  wonder and it felt like home.

Sadly, when the house was sold, the willow was cut down. But this weeping willow will always be one of my special memories.

The willow symbolises to me the heart of a journal.

A journal is a place where you can be yourself. It’s a place where you can let your imagination run wild. It’s a place where you can be creative and express yourself. It’s a place where you can document your memories, keep your treasures, and record your life. It’s a place of beauty and wonder. And it’s a place that feels like home.

Logo and business card

Well, I’ve just ordered 100 of these business cards for a trial run.

I ended up including blue in the logo because even though all black is classic, when I saw the proofs it just wasn’t me. I need colour, and blue is me.

The blue also represents creativity. I love the classic look but I’m not here to be classic; I’m here to be creative. So I wanted to go for something a bit different that spoke of imagination and an element of unconventionality.

The other thing I changed was the back where I streamlined it. It was a bit too busy with all the social media icons, so I just simplified it and included the two most important details.

I’m not sure if I’ll like the colour or design when I see the actual cards so that’s why I’ve just gone for 100 cards. I can always change it for the next print run.

A thank you gift for Kathy

I’m sending this little bit of happy mail to one of the ladies who helped me come up with a business name.

She suggested Blue Willow and even shared a picture for inspiration. I loved the name but it’s actually the name of a type of pattern, so I didn’t want anyone to be confused with that.

I wanted to thank Kathy anyway since I would have taken that name otherwise.

She said she liked flamingoes so I went for a pink theme and included a few flamingo images.

Hope she likes it.

Blogging, Junk journal

The new name for my blog/business

After going round in circles trying to think of a blog/business name, I was inspired to do a poll by Amy L Sauder’s post where she got people to vote for the title of her book.

She wrote about how the comments people wrote in response to possible titles helped her choose the title.

I thought this was a great idea, so I did a poll in three groups I’m part of. One is an international junk journal group, one is an Australian junk journal group, and one is my group of blog readers.

At first it was a bit confusing because each group had a majority vote for a different name. The international group liked Journal Heaven, the Aussie group like Junk Journal Treasures, and the blog group like Sapphire Slippers.

But across the three groups, Willow was the clear second winner. And when I read the comments, the people who chose Willow mentioned the vibe I was after and they resonated with my willow story.

This showed me Willow had to be in the name because it connected with these words I was after: magical, wonder, beauty, whimsical, special memories, home. This is what journals are all about for me.

Unfortunately, Willow was already taken. People gave me lots of suggestions. One that I really loved was Blue Willow but it was taken. As was Willow Pages and other variations.

But one lady came up with Willowbound and I loved it. I tested it out with the three groups via another poll, and 62 out of 83 people voted for it. Their comments also showed me it was the winner. One in particular was the clincher: ‘Willowbound gives me a unique feeling since it isn’t a real word. I like it, it opens the imagination.’

I wanted unique and I definitely wanted imagination. The willow I played under was a place where I dreamed up fantasy lands and became a princess acting out my own stories. It was a place of imagination and that’s what a journal is for me too. A journal can be anything you want it to be.

So Willowbound Journals it is – yay!!!!

I’ve changed my blog and social media accounts to Willowbound Journals and I’m getting ready for an official launch.

I’m in the process of designing a logo. Here’s a bit of an inside look at some designs I’ve been working on:

I’m going to have a simple wreath of willow leaves with a ‘W’ in the middle.

I was testing out lots of ways to write the letter. I showed them to the junk journal groups and they helped me decide.

The winning ‘W’  is the one in bold:

This is exciting because it’s actually a free font that is also available on WordPress. It’s Tangerine.

I may change it later, but for now this is just something simple I can put on a business card.

I’m going to play around with colours and styles and might do another poll for the logo.

Anyway, just wanted to keep you updated. The official launch will happen as soon as I get this logo done and do some things with my shop and blog.

I’d like to get a giveaway ready for the launch and put all my journals on sale to  help me get started. I also want to have some freebies available and just need to work out how I want to organise my blog with this new direction I’m taking.

As mentioned in a previous post, I want to start doing regular interviews, tutorials, giveaways, journal process posts, and general thoughts on writing, creating, and memory keeping.

I hope to create a blog space that is full of inspiration, beauty, creativity, and encouragement.

Vote for my new journal blog and business name

Thanks so much to everyone who commented on my previous post asking for help with a new name.

After doing three polls in various groups I’m part of, I’ve narrowed it down to two-ish options and I’m stuck because my heart wants one option but my head thinks the other option might be wiser.

Willow resonated with most people and I really want to include that word because of what it represents: wonder, precious memories, home – all ideas that also capture what a journal is about for me.

Willow Journals is already taken, as is Willow Pages and variations. But Willowbound was suggested, or Willowbound Journals. What do you think?

The other option is Silk Journals because I’m also a writer, my email is wordslikesilk, and I self-publish memoirs through Words Like Silk which I hope to turn into a writing business one day.

Words Like Silk is about the love and power of writing to help people. It’s also about self-expression, creativity, using your voice, and sharing stories, in general. Through it I’d love to have branches like writing courses, a stationery line, storytelling through art, etc.

So I could have things like Silk Journals, Silk Stationery, Silk Art, etc. Or I can use a specific name that is more meaningful to each branch that captures what it’s about for me, like Willowbound for journals.

Either way, Words Like Silk will be the umbrella, but do I go with the generic, easy Silk option or the more meaningful but less simple, unique name option?

Another thing to consider is Willow has resonated with a lot of people, but I’m not sure if Silk Journals on its own even resonates with people.

My heart is with Willowbound because of the meaning behind it, but Silk might be the wiser choice in terms of business and branding.

What do I do? Argh! Haha, at least I’ve narrowed it down. Any help would be super appreciated.

Blog troubles and vote for new name

Oh my goodness, I’m having so many problems with the new journal blog.

First, most of the posts aren’t showing up for some reason and I have no idea why.

Second, I’m having trouble re-writing posts in the past tense. It just doesn’t capture the same excitement I had in the moment.

Third, the doubling up of blogs and posts is very time-consuming and tedious work. I’ve realised it would take me forever to catch up with posts. Especially since I want to include new posts as well.

So, I’m going to stick with this blog because it captures my journey with junk journaling in real-time.

This means I’m going to make quite a few changes to this blog. I’m going to cut out anything that isn’t journal related, I’m going to redesign it, and I’m going to hopefully take it in a slightly new direction where I include posts about journaling in general. Why I do it, why I love it, my journaling process, etc. And I hope to include interviews, tutorials, and giveaways.

I’m also going to have to come up with a new name. I’d really appreciate your help with this so I have a few options that you can vote for. I’ve included a bit of the reasoning behind them:

  • Junk Journal Treasures – Pretty self-explanatory; I create journals that are also treasures.
  • Fairy Wren – This one’s more symbolic since I love fairy wrens and the colour blue.
  • Sparkle Journal or Sparkle Journals – Because I love anything glittery and it has a bit of a rhyme.
  • Willow – Another symbolic one. I used to love playing in a weeping willow. It was magical and a special memory, so this captures the magic of journals and memory keeping.
  • Fairy Light Journals – Symbolic again. I used to have fairy lights on my bedroom ceiling. Again, it was magical and another special memory. It was unique and I like the idea of each journal being unique for each person.
  • Journal Heaven – A tribute to the love of journals.
  • Sapphire Slippers – Very symbolic and a play on ruby slippers where a journal feels like home. Also, stepping into magical worlds.
  • Bluebird or Blue Butterfly – Again, because I love blue and these are my things. I collect them and always ask for them in happy mail.

Okay, so I’ve been playing around with so many ideas. Please help – hehe!

Please let know which name you like best and why. I’m trying to capture a certain feeling with the name to show what journaling is about for me: memories, a home, beauty, inspiration, magic, writing, creativity, etc.

Thanks so much for sticking with me and please bear with me as I make some changes to this blog over this next stage.
